That’s it. For all the chaos and entangled past futures, The Warp Effect is my Mondays’ blessing. I need the show to mess with my head in a certain way, and it serves exactly that. Also, with that many characters, how they managed to have all of them intertwined through such a compartmentalizing way, I am in awe.

Making the case to watch The Warp Effect immediately if you are watching Only Friends and have not seen that piece yet.

So I see much of my tumblr sphere was getting in to Only Friends today as is our God given right. We are only one episode in and I am already deeply in love with this show and also still trying to figure out how to process my emotions about it in to coherent thought.

But because my brain has not finished loading all the details of what occurred this morning, I would instead like to make a case for why I think it is important to watch The Warp Effect immediately if you are planning to watch Only Friends and haven't seen it.

The Warp Effect and Only Friends are co-directed by Ninew and Jojo and written by Jojo (+ the rest of the writing team obviously). If you are at all curious about what the style of Only Friends is going to potentially end up looking like, or you want to compare the structure of Only Friends to other paired works, I think it is worth it to watch The Warp Effect.

The Warp Effect and Only Friends heavily feature sex. It is my personal opinion that Jojo used The Warp Effect and its depicted sex scenes as a way to get his foot in the door for what he wanted to/planned to do in Only Friends. When I heard about Only Friends being sex heavy, I automatically placed my expectations for the types of sex and the depictions of sex in OF at the level we got in TWE. Only Friends in the first episode has already exceeded my expectations of what I thought we would get, but if you are at all curious about how the depictions of sex in Only Friends compare in terms how much of a sex scene is depicted on screen, the types of sex people are having, and the overall tone of the sex scenes (aka comedic or serious), I would recommend checking out TWE.

The Warp Effect and Only Friends are ensemble works with a lot of messy, moving parts. If you have been on tumblr and in the BL sphere in the last couple months, you may have seen a number of flow charts circulating, of how each of the Only Friends characters is connected to one another. As we have seen from the first episode, the relationships are already getting messy and complicated, and it stands to reason they may get even more so. The Warp Effect is another show that has a lot going on with all of it's characters that need to be kept track of. In other words, if you are curious about Jojo (+ crews) ability to successfully pull off a 12 episode story of complete and utter chaos.

The Warp Effect and Only Friends cover heavy themes. I must say I had nothing but unrestrained summer winter fun watching TWE, even as conversations around abortion, sexual assault, religious trauma, and homophobia came up throughout the show. I don't think we know the full extent to which Jojo (+ crew) will be covering heavy or difficult subjects, but we already know OF involves: substance use, sex work, and cheating. I have no doubt we are going to get even more sociopolitical commentary from Jojo and co. for this show. So if you haven't seen Jojo's work outside of things like Never Let Me Go I think it would actually be really beneficial for you to get better acquainted with Jojo's domain and how he navigates giving the audience a good time while also making political statements.

Vibes. The Warp Effect and Only Friends have a lot of similarities in terms of it's structure (messy, complicated; ensemble cast; political commentary; sex heavy) but tonally they are already shaping up to be very different. As @waitmyturtles said in a conversation with me and @lurkingshan after watching the first episode "[TWE] is so smart, it knows what it's doing from the very first episode". Similarly, Jojo has a clear vision for Only Friends and knows exactly what he wants to say. And with those surieties comes a distinct difference in the style of the shows. The Warp Effect is very frequently played for comedy. The sex scenes are often intentionally over the top. That is decidedly not the case for Only Friends, and I for one, think that is fascinating.

All of this to say, that I am not sure that we would have been able to get Only Friends without Jojo leveraging his power at GMMTV to first make The Warp Effect, testing out the concept of both feasibility and viewer engagement of non-sponsored, more overtly sexual shows. Or if we did I think it would have come at the cost of a lot of the physical intimacy/fucking moments we are going to get in this show. Which makes TWE worth watching as we start the Only Friends journey.

And while you are at it, you should watch Gay OK Bangkok, which is a partnership between Jojo and Aof as directors, which is incredibly well done, and which Jojo himself says he has drawn inspiration from for what is going to happen in Only Friends. Which is why I'm not writing a whole post about it, because it doesn't need one. Jojo himself has said OF draws from his GOBK days, which makes it required viewing before we get to deep in to Only Friends territory from where I stand.

The Warp Effect Live Blogging

I've been obsessed with the idea of this show since I watched the freaking mock trailer like sooo long years ago (late 2021? early 2022? like 2 years ago bruh) and was so glad that people seemed to really like the actual show when it released, can't believe I'm finally watching it. I attempted to watch this once before but it was while I was taking a break at university and uh this is not a show I can watch in public, so I had to stop just a few minutes in and now I'm back like a year later.

Anyway, I better love it. I'm gonna lose my shit if it turns out like Be My Favourite for me (I love the mock trailer -> people love the show -> I finally watch the show and find it... fine).

Ep 1 (Apr 20)

She was a young woman who was raped by somebody she deeply trusted (idc that he was young and drunk and it was "unintentional" - doesn't undo what he did), then ostracized by the school while he was put on a padastal (and left his other friends to follow his popularity), then suspended, then found out she was pregnant at a time when abortion was illegal. It makes plenty of fucking sense to me that she didn't go and tell Alex what happened. Honestly, a pretty fun end and kind of makes me less upset at the other stuff. Like I'm still intellectually upset at it when I think about it, but I'm on a high from the fun stuff, so it doesn't feel as terrible as when I finished ep 11.

Overall:

A unique and enjoyable show, it was so fun to see all these characters in their specific situations and how they deal with them. The characters were all compelling, it's wild how I was into all their storylines. how charming each character/their story was, and how the story juggled them. It also made me see a bunch of actors in new lights, New most of all, as they acted in a role outside of their usual wheelhouse.

I think the most frustrating part for me was how it seemed like although they were getting at it, they never quite acknowledged that what Alex did to Jean that night was rape. It made me quite angry actually, especially how Alex's actions didn't feel like it actually took Jean's feelings and trauma and requests into account. I was at least glad that in that timeline, Jean doesn't get back with Alex.

I’m not currently watching anything, no!

I’ve had a few series recommended to me recently, but I can’t remember much of what I’ve seen since Between Us ended. I think most of the series I’m looking forward to haven’t aired yet. I just got Tears of the Kingdom, too, so my brain has been consumed by fusing mushrooms to swords.

But in terms of what I’d recommend!

The Warp Effect is technically from 2022 but it started in late December so it feels like a 2023 series. It’s incredible, and it includes so many aspects of queer life and sexual/gender identities that it just puts every other series on blast. “You can’t have romances with lesbians and trans people? Weird, because The Warp Effect had both. And had the (alleged) heterosexuals promoting the benefits and discussing the complexities of kink in relationships.” New was fantastic in this, too. TWE is so good.

And on the total opposite end of the rating spectrum, I thought My School President was really fun and well executed. I loved both couples, I thought the writing was great, and I actively went looking for the songs after each episode, and I hadn’t done that since Cutie Pie. (And Between Us but we all know I recommend Between Us.)

I do really want to watch the Eclipse and MSP episodes of Our Skyy, but I’m having that block of “noooo if I watch then I won’t have any more to watch”, and apart from Only Friends, there doesn’t seem to be another FirstKhao series this year (a crime).

I’m also looking forward to Only Friends even though I’m going into it with a very different mindset (yay Jojo!) than I usually have (yay love!) just because I know I’m gonna get my heart busted if I’m not emotionally prepared.

The Next Prince is ZeeNuNew’s next project and I’m very ready for their brand of trope-y fun. I have no idea when they’re even filming so I guess it’ll air in autumn sometime.

It Lingers in the Air is an historical BL I’ve been looking forward to for ages now. I’ve been screaming for historical stuff from the start because Thai history interests me but I haven’t found as much easily accessible resources to educate myself on. So I’ll take what I can get and let some fictional gays teach me pseudo-history.

Naughty Babe is going to be pure nonsense garbage and I’m going to watch every episode as an Event with friends and snacks.

And of course Be My Favorite starts next Friday on the 26th, and I’ve been excited about that since December of 2021, so I’m predicting now that that’s gonna be the one that really brings me back to hyperfixating on series. I’m a massive fan of time loops as a trope (see also my utter adoration for Triage), I love Krist and Gawin and Aye, and the supporting cast looks fantastic too. And the director has a good reputation (The Gifted) and apparently had Queer as Folk as a formative queer experience just like me, so I’m inclined to trust him.

I think that covers most of it? I feel like I’ve forgotten something I’ve seen and half of my brain says, “Then it wasn’t that memorable now was it,” but also sometimes my brain just likes to forget stuff until I’ve posted something.

Can I say that if this is the tone of Warp Effect I am scared for Only Friends? cuz this cast is already fenomenal and the series is AMAZING... but seeing what this cast did make me fear for OF cuz if any of my boys do anything remotely close to what this cast did(considering Mark is in both shows I am already geering up cuz the opening of this week episode of Warp was... I am gonna say it of Only Friends is even remotely close in spice and plot as Warp Effect I am gonna die cuz already warp effect kills me every week(it is onestly my favourote show at the moment!) and seeing FirstKhao and NeoMark(and Force Book but in a smaller part than the other 2) like this is gonna be my undoing!!!!

Also the opening scene of yestedays episode made me think of the opening of season 3 of Sex Education lol I think Jojo really took inspirarion of that show and decided to kinda make the Thai version with his personal view and storytelling and onestly it is paying off this show is glorious

I was thinking the same thing but I'm pretty certain that OF will not go as hard as the warp effect lmao. 

the warp effect literally IS about sex lmao and it uses that as its main plot device; it has a heavy focus on sex education and breaking the stigma, which is one of the many things I appreciate about the show but that's not what OF is about at all. yes, there is naughty stuff involved lol but it gives off a completely different vibe to me. My estimation, and also according to multiple interviews, is that it will focus more on the relationships between the 6 mains, rather than the graphic stuff lol. Obviously that goes hand in hand but since there's less characters involved, I think it's gonna be more tame. and by that I mean it's probably gonna be intense but we won't see scenes like that opening part of the latest TWE episode lmao.

In the end I think we're going more into a Friend Zone direction with OF aka spicy but decent and with a lot of relationship drama lol. Also let's not forget that the mock trailer is always crazier and wilder than the actual show so let's wait and see 👀 but then again considering what the show's twitter account posted this morning,,,,, I'm not so sure jdshkjgdf

For real, the entire cast of Newton Haven characters are written so well (even the goddamn Reverend Green!), it's part of why I love TWE so much. I adore in-depth characters and foreshadowing, but I also love a dynamic ensemble.

Each one of the Five Musketeers is complicated! Steve's still embroiled in this rivalry with Gary, to his own detriment; he seems pretty insecure (especially about his appearance) the whole time they gang is together.

Meanwhile, Andy just exudes stress, and it's definitely made an impact on his personal life (*cough* divorce *cough cough*). This is even years after leaving Newton Haven, after the accident, after Gary receded from Andy's life. Even before he sees Gary again, all of Andy's interactions are tense and terse (the little wave he does during the opening montage, the way he says "Felicity" and doesn't even look at her).

What anon says about Oliver and Peter is so true!! I completely forgot how wild it is that everyone accepts the Blank Oliver, not just because they're intoxicated, but because Oliver was already kind of like that. Even Sam, his not-drunk sister, doesn't get suspicious before Andy does.

He spent his childhood playing baseball in the dusty streets, doing odd jobs, and hanging around our beloved Theatre. Once he’d picked up his reading, writing, and arithmetic, LeClair  nixed his classroom education in favor of learning from the genius of the Bard, and from the great works of our modern Ameri c n playwrights. MR. LECLAIR has been working in stagecraft since his boyhood. His ascension to the sta gₑᵢₛ ᵤₙ ₚᵣₑc ₑ dₑₙₜ d his ahsnce n, js his Mr Sterling LeClair is a mere twe nty-one yearsof age. See, it’s his temper that would get him. But what a gas! He’d dance you all night long. And not afraid of anything! Oh, he’s awfully short compared to most fellas, only sta nds a few inches abo ve me, but you wouldn’t know it. He’s got some kind of presence, like a real stage star. And he’ll punch any man in the nose about, well, over nothing really. But you’d think he was made of sugar half the time. And he’s a terrible flirt. I think that’s what got him in the most trouble, at the end of it. Everyone knows  you don’t get mix ed up  with those big shot celebrity actors, and didn’t we all tell him. Men like that are trouble. But Sterling was the sort to go out and find trouble, anyway. Maybe he got what was coming to him. Oh, that’s awful to say, isn’t it? Don’t print that bit!

MAIN CANON.   Exclusive with @actliving.   Sterling falls for his idol, one Marcus Barnum, and never stops falling. Canon is connected with the larger Markiplier Cinematic Universe & directly follows into @jumpinagain. 

ROARING CANON.  Sterling never meets the Actor, and the curse never falls on him, leaving him free to adventure in any direction he chooses.  Set in the year 1925 by default, but this can be adjusted at request. 

MODERN VERSE.  You already know what it is. Comes in several flavors, including but not limited to college era theatre major, professional set designer, and aspiring documentarian.
